Since the Renaissance, the structures have been called “Grotte di Catullo” to indicate the collapsed rooms, covered by vegetation, within which you could enter as in natural cavities. The first scientific excavations of the site date back to the mid-nineteenth century but, only after the public acquisition of the area between 1947 and 1949, extensive research was carried out which led to the publication (1956) of a first guide of the complex, correctly interpreted as a sumptuous villa.
